American Subcontractors Association Michigan September 2010 General Membership Meeting
“Employment Law” was the topic at the September ASAM General Membership Meeting. Speakers Susan Im (McShane & Bowie) and Nate Plantinga (Miller Johnson) discussed I-9’s, ICE audits, immigration, and employee handbooks.
Susan Im spoke about I-9 and worksite compliance, which falls under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She gave examples of ICE audits and the penalties being paid; explained what employers can do to prevent an ICE audit; and listed common errors made on I-9 forms.
Nate Plantinga of Miller Johnson provided a Top Ten List for Employee Handbooks, outlining current trends and legalities. Plantinga called the employee handbook “the first line of defense in virtually every employee case” and said that it’s worth its weight in gold. He suggests that if you haven’t dusted off your handbook in the last year or so, it’s time to take another look, as the law has changed in several areas, and additional developments are expected.
