September 2011 General Membership Meeting

At September’s General Membership Meeting, 31 were in attendance to hear Steve Hilger of Hilger Hammond Attorneys at Law speak on the subject of contracts. His talk was titled “I Didn’t Sign a Contract, So Now What?” Hilger began his talk by giving examples of statements you may have heard or have even made yourself, statements such as:

• “I don’t need a contract; I’ve been dealing with this guy for 20 years.”
• “I don’t need a contract; it’s such a small job.”
• “If I ask for a contract, my client will think I don’t trust him.”
• “I’ve done lots of work with this guy on just a handshake.”

According to Hilger, it’s not just important to get a written contract in your possession, but also to get it signed by all parties. He spoke about what can happen when you don’t get the contract signed.
