PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Let's Make the Next Decade Even Better!

Reflecting on 2019 brings thoughts of gratefulness for our ASAM membership, volunteers and board. Our 10th anniversary MCOY event reminded us of our rich history, envisioned and created by key individuals within our con-struction community. As benefactors of this foundational groundwork, it’s our responsibility to continue the work of creating a positive working culture in construction with favorable recruitment and retention outcomes.

Heading into a new decade, the fol-lowing challenges are before us:

  • Continue to influence and recognize positive CM/Trade Contractor working cultures
  • Advance an environment that attracts new recruits to our industry
  • Encourage the development of our young leaders

With your involvement and dedication, we can meet these challenges head on and directly impact outcomes. If you’re thinking about joining an ASAM committee or are interested in joining the board, please reach out to one of us. We encourage everyone to Get Involved, Make an Impact!

To kick off 2020, our ASAM Executive Board will be holding a retreat to connect the dots between mission, vision and key strategies as we work toward addressing the challenges before us. Together, as essential workers, com-panies and teams assembled under ASAM, we ARE a driving and influential force committed to making the next decade even better!

Are You Getting the Most Out of Your ASAM Membership?

I want to start off by thanking the companies that have joined our membership ranks this past year, as well as thank our new sponsors. Commitments like these help ASAM to continue to be robust, allowing more voices to be heard for quality, safety and collaboration within our industry.

With that, I ask the question: Are you getting the most out of your ASAM Membership? (“You” refers not only to individuals, but to companies as well.)

  • Does your ASAM Membership permeate throughout your organization?
  • Do multiple individuals or depart-ments within your organization take full advantage of all the value and benefits that come along with an ASAM Membership?

My hope is that you answered “yes” to the last two questions. ASAM has been, and will continue to be, successful when as many voices as possible are heard. So, introduce a new member of your organization to one of our General Membership Meetings or Construction Advancement Forums. Invite someone who has not attended an ASAM event before to take part in one of our Business Practice Interchanges. Have one of your field employees join us at a Jobsite Safety Walkthrough with MIOSHA.

This year, I encourage you to in-crease the value of your ASAM Membership by introducing those individuals who make your organization a success-ful one to all the benefits ASAM offers.

Join Us March 4 for the Sixth Annual CWDA RallyScreen_Shot_2019-11-26_at_12.54.56_PM.png

March 4, 2020, 4–9 p.m.
GRCC Leslie E Tassel M-TEC

The Construction Workforce Development Alliance (CWDA) is compiled of members from ABC West Michigan, Grand Rapids Community College, American Subcontractors Association of Michigan and Home Builders Association of Greater Grand Rapids. These groups and individuals participate in raising funds for construction awareness, career education, trades training and special construction-related projects.

Each year, CWDA helps the construction trades interact with more than 10,000 middle school, high school and college students as well as young adults interested in learning more about entering the skilled-trades market.

We can all agree that this is a noble cause worth supporting, but it does require funding. March 4, 2020 will mark the 6th annual CWDA Rally fundraiser, where commercial and residential construction industry professionals gather to compete in outrageous, construction-themed games like building the tallest structure out of marshmallows and straws; a personal protective equipment relay race; and (a crowd favorite) building PVC rally cars! All proceeds from the rally will go toward the CWDA’s mission of attracting, retaining and training the next generation of construction-industry professionals.

Grab your craft professionals, project managers, superintendents, office staff and everyone in between—and join us for an evening of food, drinks, competition and fun!

To register, and to watch the CWDA Rally promotional video, please visit webuildmi.com/rally. Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the event.

Congratulations to Dan Vos Construction for winning the CWDA Rally Championship two years in a row!
